Each year, Oregon Organic Coalition honors visionaries in organic agriculture who make outstanding contributions to the growth and success of Oregon’s organic sector.

Oregon Organic Coalition’s Awards for Excellence recognizes individuals and organizations whose vision, leadership, and innovation strengthen Oregon’s organic food and farming movement. Honorees include farmers, processors, retailers, educators, researchers, policymakers, and advocates who go above and beyond in advancing organic integrity and sustainability.

Submissions received after the deadline will be considered for the next year’s awards—so it’s never too early to honor someone’s contributions to Oregon’s organic community.

We welcome nominations for individuals, organizations, farms, businesses, researchers, educators, policymakers, and advocates who demonstrate outstanding contributions to Oregon’s organic sector.

Nominees must:

Be based in Oregon or have a demonstrated impact on Oregon’s organic industry
Uphold organic principles and practices in alignment with USDA Organic certification standards
Exhibits leadership, innovation, and commitment to the advancement of organic agriculture
Nominees may work in any part of the organic food system: production, processing, distribution, education, or policy.

Categories

For 2025, the OOC invites nominations in ten categories, each representing a critical segment of the organic food and fiber system. Award recipients will be selected based on their demonstrated achievements and their commitment to the core organic principles of health, ecology, fairness, and care. Nominators are encouraged to provide specific examples of the nominee’s activities and accomplishments that demonstrate their leadership, innovation, and service within the organic community. All nominations will be reviewed by the OOC’s Nominations Committee, composed of members of the organic trade and community. Final awardees will be selected for having significantly advanced Oregon’s organic movement through excellence in their field.

Farm: Field, Fiber and Orchard Crops

Presented to a farm that exemplifies the development of standards and practices that promote soil health, biodiversity, and organic cropping systems. The recipient consistently produces highly nutritious and toxic-free foods and fibers. 

Farm: Livestock

Awarded to a livestock producer or organization that demonstrates outstanding development and application of organic standards and practices for animal welfare. This includes excellence in areas such as animal nutrition, access to pasture, holistic pasture management, preventative health care, and humane treatment and slaughter, often exceeding National Organic Program requirements.

Farm: Equitable Working Conditions

Recognizes a farm or organization that sets a high standard in supporting farmworkers. Criteria include fair wages, quality housing, access to training, and a safe and respectful working environment. The award also considers the treatment of apprentices, interns, and other contracted farmworkers.

Scientist/Researcher/Conservationist

Honors an individual or organization contributing significantly to the organic movement through scientific research, conservation efforts, or technical support. Their work leads to improvements in organic practices, sustainability, environmental stewardship, and understanding of organic systems.

Organic Advocate

Awarded to an individual or organization that actively promotes organic agriculture and resilient regional food systems. This may include legislative advocacy, educational campaigns, community organizing, marketplace events, or public storytelling that elevates the visibility and importance of organics.

Processor/Distributor/Handler

Presented to an organization that plays a critical role in linking producers to retail markets (stores, restaurants, caterers, home delivery), through ethical and efficient processing, distribution, and post-harvest handling. The recipient supports organic integrity and offers promotional support for local and regional producers.

Retailer

Recognizes a retail business that prioritizes local and regional organic products, educates consumers, and cultivates strong relationships with Oregon’s organic farmers and ranchers. Their programs contribute to a thriving organic marketplace.

Restaurant/Chef/Caterer

Awarded to a foodservice professional or establishment that consistently delivers high-quality organic meals, while also serving as a conduit between eaters and producers. This award honors efforts to educate diners about organic ingredients and encourage the integration of Oregon-grown organic products into everyday life.

Public Service Award

Presented to an individual who has contributed to the organic sector through service in public institutions such as government agencies, education systems, or nonprofit advocacy. Their work helps shape policy, build infrastructure, and supports the organic trade at the community, state, or national level.

Legacy

This award celebrates an individual whose career has been devoted to building, defending, and expanding the organic movement. Through decades of work—often across multiple roles—they have demonstrated enduring commitment, helping shape educational frameworks, regulatory systems, and market opportunities for organic growers, producers, and consumers.

Meet the 2025 Honorees

Farm – Field, Fiber, and Orchard Crops

Jeff and Elise Higley, Oshala Farm

This award celebrates crop farmers who nurture biodiversity and healthy soil while feeding their communities. Oshala Farm is leading by example with innovative practices and strong community partnerships. On the Higley’s 290-acre regenerative organic farm in Southern Oregon, they grow over 80 varieties of medicinal and culinary herbs with dedication, care, and love for the land.

Farm – Equitable Working Conditions

Lili Tova, Flying Coyote Farm

Organic means caring for people as well as the land. This year’s honoree, Lili Tova ensures fairness, safety, and respect for farmworkers, setting a high standard for equity in agriculture.

Farm – Livestock/Dairy

Allison and Travis Cardoza, Cardoza Dairy

Fundamental organic principles mean that farmers raising animals do so in ways that care for both the land and the animals. Cardoza Dairy built their business from the ground up on the belief that organic is the best way to raise cows and a family. Allison and Travis Cardoza’s pasture-based system protects soil health and produces healthy, organic dairy for the Organic Valley cooperative.

Restaurant/Chef/Caterer

Rodrigo Huerta and Mary Hatz, Comida Kin

Chefs and caterers bring organic food to the table in delicious, creative ways. Comida Kin has built a business that keeps communities strong while highlighting the power of local, organic ingredients.

Processor/Handler/Distributor

 Franklin Jones, B-Line Urban Delivery

B-Line Urban Delivery reimagined urban logistics with electric freight trikes, reducing congestion, lowering emissions, and proving that business can be a catalyst for positive change. Jones’s vision and leadership are helping create more sustainable cities while strengthening connections between farmers, food producers, and communities.

Retailer

Cameron Stearns, Mountain Rose Herbs

Mountain Rose Herbs has set the standard for sustainable business since 1987. From bulk herbs and teas, to fair trade practices and domestic farm collaborations, they’ve shown that people, plants, and the planet can come before profit. Stearns’s leadership continues to inspire trust and innovation in the organic marketplace.

Scientist/Researcher/Conservationist

Rob Schultz, Lemelson Vineyards & Organic Winegrowers Network

Rob Schultz is the vineyard manager of Lemelson Vineyards and a proven conservationist. For more than 20 years, Rob has grown premium organic wine grapes while mentoring the next generation of growers. As founder of the Organic Winegrowers Network, he’s built a community of collaboration and innovation, ensuring that organic viticulture continues to flourish in Oregon’s wine country.

Public Service

Chris Schreiner

Chris Schreiner dedicated 27 years to advancing organic agriculture through his leadership at Oregon Tilth and national policy work. Schreiner has expanded resources for farmers, strengthened relationships with agencies, and tirelessly advocated for a strong organic movement. His vision has shaped a resilient foundation for organics in Oregon and beyond.

Dr. Garry Stephenson, Emeritus Professor at Oregon State University

Dr. Stephenson co-founded OSU’s Center for Resilient Agriculture & Food Systems, and was integral to forming the Organic Agriculture Program. Through these programs, Stephenson has championed support for alternative crops, underserved farmers, and local food systems. Stephenson’s career has left a lasting mark on organic research, education, and policy and put OSU’s Organic Extension Program on the map nationally.

Legacy

Tom Lively

Tom Lively has long been a trailblazer in Oregon’s organic farming movement. From founding one of the state’s largest organic farms in the 1980s to co-founding Organically Grown Company, Lively shaped the organic marketplace for decades. Today, Lively and his wife continue to amaze customers with vibrant produce, embodying a lifelong commitment to delicious and sustainable food.

Charlie Tilt

Charlie Tilt is a food systems visionary who has a legacy of supplying high-quality organic pantry staples while prioritizing partnerships with Pacific Northwest farms at Hummingbird Wholesale. Tilt’s leadership ensured that Hummingbird’s business model benefits both customers, employees and farmers—a true force for good in the organic food system.
